EU Emissions
Trading Scheme
(EU ETS)

What is the EU ETS?

The EU ETS is a system based on a ‘cap and trade’ principle. Its aim is to reduce the total greenhouse gas emissions from energy intensive industries and to generate revenues to support the green transition. Emissions are converted into tradable allowances, with the capped emissions reducing each year to provide an economic incentive for installations to decarbonise.

The EU ETS was launched in 2005 and it operates in trading phases. Currently we are in Phase IV, which runs 2021 to 2030.

Who does the EU ETS
apply to?

The EU ETS operates in all EU countries, as well as Norway, Liechtenstein and Iceland. It was also linked with the Swiss ETS in 2020. It applies to energy intensive industries, covering emissions from industrial manufacturing, electricity and heat generation, aviation and, more recently maritime transport.

It applies to stationary installations have a combined thermal input capacity of greater than 20 MW thermal, made up of units greater than 3 MW thermal.
